It is an American holiday, Election Day.

By Friday 11/4 @ midnight:

1. Complete and email me your 4-Square worksheet for your descriptive essay if you haven’t already BEFORE you write your body paragraphs.

2. Write the 3 or 4 body paragraphs of your descriptive essay using 5 of your descriptive adjectives and at least 3 more.  Please email to me by Friday night 11/4/11 and I will email you the corrections.  (Remember, in your essay, you can describe your favorite place using the past tense form, OR your ideal/dream place, house, car, world, or anything using “would + be + adjective” and “would + verb infinitive” form).

By next Tuesday 11/8 @ midnight:

3. Textbook- Parallel Structure: Read pgs. 226-227 and complete Exercises 40-41

4. Textbook- Consistency of Verb Tenses: Read pgs. 236-238 and complete Exercises 53-55.  I WILL BE LOOKING FOR PARALLEL AND CONSISTENT WRITING IN YOUR DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY BODY PARAGRAPHS.

5. Complete your midterm corrections and email them to me if you haven’t already.

Topic Week 8: Elements of Descriptive Writing

1. Open Descriptive Writing Explanation and read about adjectives

2. Write down 5 adjectives to describe the photo/drawing of your favorite special place in the world.

3. Read and complete textbook pg. 50, questions #1-5 about your favorite special place. (I will COLLECT this)

4. Read textbook pgs. 50-51 “Our Cottage,” an example of a descriptive essay, and complete comprehension questions #1-5 pg. 52. (I will COLLECT this)

5. Read “Descriptive Writing Explanation” about synonyms and antonyms using a thesaurus and how to find them.

6. Read and complete textbook pg. 52 about synonyms and antonyms, Exercise 1 #1-5.

7. Find 5 synonyms and 5 antonyms for your original 5 adjectives that describe your place and fill it in the empty chart provided in “Descriptive Writing Explanation.”  Please EMAIL ME this chart by Sunday at midnight, 10/23 .

8.  Don’t forget to bring your photo/drawing of your favorite special place AND a cultural item from your country (for those of you who already gave it to me, you don’t need to do this). 

You can complete this Quiz #1 EN031 Fall Semester 2011 either at home and email it to me, OR you can complete it on the same day you take the midterm.  Either way, I need to have the quiz by the end of next Tuesday’s class, 10-18-11.  The quiz will be 20 points and worth 10% of your midterm grade.  The quiz will be on the following topics:

  • Components of a well-written paragraph (list them)
  • Writing topic sentences (write one based on a paragraph I give you)
  • Supporting sentences/details/examples (write two based on a topic sentence I give you)
  • Concluding sentences (write one based on a paragraph I give you)
  • Regular and irregular verb tenses for present simple, past simple, past progressive/continuous, & used to/would (fill in the blanks)
  • Time prepositions including adverbials (fill in the blanks)
  • Time-order transition words (fill in the blanks)
  • Word form suffixes for changing a word from a verb to a noun (fill in the blanks)

 For the midterm, you will be asked to write either 1) A paragraph about a topic from a list of 5 choices or 2) A narrative paragraph from a list of 3 choices.  You be graded based on the writing rubric we’ve used in class and everything we covered in class or did online, including grammar (topics are listed above).  The midterm writing assignment will 80 points and worth 50% of your midterm grade.
