Grade 9 (English 1)

  • Complete comprehension questions for Chapters 9-10 on a SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER.  If it is typed directly into the document, make sure you PRINT IT OUT BEFORE YOU COME TO MY CLASS.
  • Read Chapters 11-12 and be prepared for a quiz.
  • “Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis”
  • Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, “a factitious word alleged to mean ‘a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust, causing inflammation in the lungs.'”
  • A condition meeting the word’s definition is normally called silicosis.
  • It occurs chiefly as an instance of a very long word.
  • The 45-letter word was coined as the longest word to ever appear in an English language dictionary.
  • Pick your best/favorite journal entry that you’ve written this school year, and write in a formal paragraph with richer vocabulary and your own “voice,” and turn it in.  It should be:
    • Typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 13-point font
    • Printed out BEFORE the start of my class.
    • Between 130 and 170 words (if you write more, I won’t take points off).
  • Please read “The Giver” Chapters 8 (if you haven’t already), Chapter 9, and Chapter 10.  You may or may not have a quiz on this, so make sure you have read it by the start of class!
  • Complete the Comprehension questions for Chapter 8 on a separate sheet of paper (IF you haven’t already).
  • Study the meanings of the vocab words for Chapters 1-8 from “the Giver.”
  •  You will have 15 minutes of class time to study for the quiz, but please make sure you are more comfortable with the words.
  • Here is the complete list with all the words and their definitions: The Giver- Vocab Chapters 1-8
  • Complete the Vocabulary worksheet for all vocab words for Chapter 7 AND Chapter 8 (remember it’s at least 3 words per chapter).
  • If you didn’t finish the comprehension questions for Chapter 7 in class today, PLEASE COMPLETE on a separate sheet of paper by next class.
  • Read the rest of Chapter 8.
  • Complete the Comprehension Questions for Chapter 6 (see previous post for the document) on a separate sheet of paper this time.
  • Complete the Vocabulary Worksheet for the words from Chapters 4-6 that we discussed in class today.  Remember, you must choose at least 3 words per chapter, unless there are less words for that chapter.
  • NONE because you behaved well overall and we went over time in class.  Enjoy your weekend!
